What is Chinese Medicine? How Does Acupuncture Work?
Chinese medicine and acupuncture have been used for over 3000 years to treat and prevent illness. Treating both the body and mind in unison, this form of medicine emphasizes a holistic approach to health. Acupuncture stimulates the body's ability to heal itself, by activating specific points on the body to improve the circulation of blood, promote the free-flow of qi, and relieve pain. Chinese herbal medicine can be used independently or as a complement to acupuncture to regulate function and promote internal balance.
What Does the First Treatment Include?
How Long Does an Appointment Last?
Your first visit will last about 90 minutes, as we will go through a thorough history and intake. Subsequent visits will be about 30-60 minutes. Once the needles are inserted, you will lay comfortably for 20-45 minutes.
What Can I Expect to Feel from My First Treatment?
Everybody experiences the effects of acupuncture a little differently. Depending on the type of problem being treated, some people may start to notice the benefits almost immediately, others may feel a difference a few hours after treatment, and some may need a few treatments before they notice an improvement. Some people become very relaxed while others may feel energized.
Is There Anything I Should Do To Prepare for a Treatment or Avoid After?
We encourage patients to wear or bring comfortable clothing- something that will allow us to roll your pants above the knee and your sleeves above the elbow. Be sure to eat a snack or meal within an hour or two of your appointment. If possible, avoid strenous activity or exercise after you are finished with your session to allow for maximum relaxation and benefit.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
For most conditions, a series of several treatments is required in order for you to achieve maximum benefit. A course of treatment for many complaints can range from 6-12 treatments while the typical course of treatment for fertility might be a treatment once or twice weekly over 3-9 months. After your initial evaluation, you will be given recommendations on the number and frequency of treatments.
Do You Accept Insurance?
We do encourage all of our patients to check with their insurance carrier to see if they offer coverage for acupuncture services. We do not bill insurance directly at this time, but can offer you the necessary paperwork to submit for reimbursement from your insurance company. Acupuncture is a flex-spending eligible service and many of our patients are able to use these funds for their treatment.
